Canada - USA trip 2001

10-09. Greenwood

10-09

Nestled in the heart of Nova Scotia 14 Wing Greenwood is the largest air base on the Canadian East Coast. Aurora crews conduct sovereignty and surveillance missions over the Atlantic Ocean routinely, while search and rescue capabilities are maintained 365 days of the year. Established in 1942 as Royal Air Force Station as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP). Greenwood was used as a training base during WWII. Based on Greenwood are 413 Squadron with the CH-113 Labrador and CC-130 Hercules , 434 Squadron flying the Canadair CE/CT-33 Silver Star and Canadair CC/CP/CE-144 Challenger and 415 Squadron flying the CP-140 Aurora. After a short briefing by the public relations officer the schedule was simple lets go and see all the aircraft present. It was nice to see more than one T-33 on the platform especially as their retirement was eminent. They were still active but the day we visited there were no flights planned. The CE-144 were retired a few weeks before and already flown off from the base.

Most of the base CP-140’s were present an photographed . But the base had one more highlights the CH-113 Labrador. There were to on the platform and one in maintenance the Labrador normally goes on a mission together with a Hercules as one did this day. At the gate of the base there is a collection of aircraft that served at the base in the years after the second world war. With a visit at Bagotville the next day we had big trip before us, just having missed the ferry we had to drive around Fungy bay adding a lot of miles to the trip . After a trip of 600 KM it was still possible to get a visit at Gagetown at 19:30 in the evening. With a visit at Bagotville the next day we had to do dome more traveling before we called it a day.
