The United Kingdom trip 2010

Valley

RAF Valley is on the West coast of Anglesey, between the towns of Valley and Rhosneigr. There is another RAF airfield nearby at Mona, used for diversions and for practice touch and goes.
On an average flying day there will be Hawks, Hawks and more Hawks. They will be lined up on ramps either side of the control tower, and over by the 22 Squadron helicopter Search And Rescue base.
The aim of the Station is straightforward and clear; to train future fast jet combat pilots. The majority of those pilots are RAF with a smaller portion being RN pilots destined for Joint Force Harrier. Valley is by far the busiest station in the Royal Air Force. Under the command of Personnel and Training Command, there are more sorties flown from RAF Valley than the entire Tornado and Typhoon Force put together.

The majority of those sorties stem from Hawk TMk1 operations by 19(R) and 208(R). However, both C Flt of 22 Sqn (operating the Sea King in the Search and Rescue role) and Search and Rescue Training Unit (operating the Griffin) make a significant contribution to the life of the station
On average you will see dozens of movements a day (Monday to Friday) by Hawks. Anglesey is blessed with an excellent climate, part of the reason the airbase is there. The island is also very flat, and adjacent to good low level training areas in the Snowdonian mountains, and to practice ranges further down the Welsh coast.

Valley is just a few minutes flying time from ranges down the coast, where live ordnance can be used against offshore targets, and air-to-air missiles against pilotless target drones.
In the 'good old days' not so long ago there would be visiting squadrons of Lightning's, Buccaneers and Phantoms.

Now it's mostly 'only' F-15Es from Lakenheath that regularly pass by, or occasionally land. nowadays the most interesting regular visitor is the Eurofighter Typhoon..

Our visit to Valley was stopped short due to the fact they stopped flying due to a malfunction of the ejections seats on the Hawks.

We did try to see if there was any low flying activity in the area. But a very low cloud base kept us from seeing anything flying.
The  weather at Valley tents to be better than the more inland low flying area's. At Valley the first new Hawks are coming in to service now.
