South Korea - Japan trip 2005

29-10 Tokio Area

29-10 Tokyo area (Saturday)

Today we had planned to do some of the fields in de Tokyo area like Camp Zama, Tachikawa en Yokota. Sadly the weather was not our friend today, it was really murky and it didn’t look like it was going to improve. At Atsugi there was almost no action only a C-130 taking off and that was it.

So we went to our first stop Camp Zama. On the way there we stopped at a shrine to take some pictures, a friendly monk handed a leaflet about the shrine to us but sadly it was only in Japanese. Still, it’s the thought that counts.

At Camp Zama, being located on a hilltop, the situation had changed from earlier reports we have read. A second fence has been put up, lower downhill from the old one making photographing a lot more difficult, but not for us since nothing was noted here. On to the next field Tachikawa, again nothing much going on. This would be the topic of the day, grey weather and no flying.

We went to get some gasoline again today. I still think it is an experience tanking in Japan. You are guided to the pump and three or four people start going around the car. It is like being in a pittstop, one takes care of the tanking process, another one for paying and the rest for cleaning windows. And after you pay they all wave you farewell.

Yokota was covered in fog and again not much happened; after hanging around for a bit and talking to some spotters we decided we had enough for today. We would have a quick look at Iruma so we would know where to go the next day. At Iruma the transport part of the Air Review would take off tomorrow. At the spotters place we played with the remotely operated camera system, by walking around, splitting up, ducking, hiding behind the trees, etc.

With time to spare we went into town to do some shopping and just to have a look around, trying to blend in with the Japanese Saturday night crowd out on the streets and in the restaurants.
