Tiger meet Albacete 2006

Tiger meet Albacete Spain.

During a Holliday in Spain it became obvious that the Tiger meet at Albacete was on. With the help of some friends at home a invitation was arranged for the Tiger meet. Together with this invitation a invitation for the operational status of the euro fighter “Typhoon”  at Moron.

After arriving in Albacete it was obvious that the Tiger meet reached out to the city with much of the participants staying in town. Where the people welcomed the aviators to several bars and restaurants.

For the second time in the history of the Tiger meet it is held at Albecete Spain.

With over 50 aircraft and chopper from ten tiger squadrons it was a one of the bigger meets held in the last years.

The history of the tiger meet go back to 1961 when the first tiger meet was held at RAF Woodbridge on July 19th, England.  At the first meet there where only three squadrons participating with on thing in common, a tiger in the squadron badge. The units where

79th Tactical Fighter Squadron USAF, 74 Squadron RAF and EC1/12 of the French Air Force.

Tiger Meets are the Associations reason for being. While in the early days the Tiger Meet was mainly a social get together from Tiger squadrons things changed rapidly and tactical flying exercises were soon implemented into the Tiger Meet program.

On a typical Tiger Meet flying program you will find missions like: range firing, air-to-air, low level navigation and COMAO missions... all of them with briefings and debriefings. Due to the growing helicopter force within the Tigers they are integrated within the mission as Forward Air Controllers or in a CSAR role. Beside their work within the COMAO's the helicopter force often practices with local army (special) forces.

Some of the last 4 NATO Tiger Meets were even incorporated into larger scale exercises like AIRNORTH's Clean Hunter 01 and Daring Eagle 02.
So what's the program of a typical full NATO Tiger Meet? Well it all starts of with the arrival of the participants and an opening ceremony in where the flags of all participating countries are raised for the time of the Tiger Meet.

After this event the actual exercise starts. This involves the daily flying. together with the necessary briefing / debriefing.

A typical flying day would by like this starting with a briefing at 07:45 followed by two missions one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Followed by a debriefing at the end of the day.

And what about the social part? Well of course there still is a social part after the flying hours. Who doesn't know our famous Tiger Games, mostly being a combination of sports and fun. And of course there is a final closedown party on which the Silver Tiger is awarded by the end of the Tiger Meet.
At this Tiger meet the following squadrons participated

142 SQN Spain Mirage F-1 ,192 SQN Turkey F-16, EC 1/12 France Mirage 2000, EC 05/330 France Mirage 2000 and Rafale, JBG 32 Germany Tornado, 31 SQN Belgium F-16, 301 SQN Portugal F-16, 1 SQN  NATO AWACS, AG 51 Germany Tornado, 338 SQN Norway F-16, 231 SQN Chez republic MI24/MI17 and 230 SQN United Kingdom PUMA

Over the years the last 40 years the Tiger Association has grown from three members to over twenty members . Sadly not all of the members of the first few years are operational squadrons anymore. With the ongoing reduction of the armed forces the association may still become even smaller.
The Association announced that 338 SKv at Orland, Norway will host the 2007 event for the first time.
We would like to thank the Public relation office of the Spanish Air Force for there support.
