Canada - USA trip 2001

15-09. Mount Hope

28-10 Hamamatsu – Shizuhama (Friday)

After a breakfast it was a short drive to Hamamatsu airbase. On the way there we passed a lot of youth on their way to school. It seems there is a contest in Japan for the shortest skirt in the school uniform. At Hamamatsu all was quiet, so we did a trip around the field and scored an E-767 Awacs and a pair of preserved T-33s.

Since nothing much was happening on the field except some running we visited the museum first. The Museum at Hamamatsu is located next to the runway of Hamamatsu airbase. Of great importance to the museum is that a technical training school is in residence at the base. As part of the training at the school aircraft destined for the museum are restored at the school. Giving the museum a collection of superbly restored aircraft. During our visit to the museum it became obvious that the only thing going on on the field today was running: a local ‘get fit’ campaign stole away the possibility to score a bundle of T-4’s and one or two more E-767’s.

Next stop was Shizuhama where they were flying instead of running. Within half an hour we had what we came for: some T-3 en T-7 (yes somebody wanted to see all the aircraft type’s). After that it was back to Atsugi what would be the start of our next day. On arrival the flying was still going on, but most of the CAW had left for the carrier that day.

A hotel was found opposite to the main gate of Atsugi, with even a view of the airfield from our room. This evening we decided to go and eat in one of the many small restaurants you see all over Japan, most of them have a sign with some pictures of what they serve. In the restaurant they were presuming we were from the Naval base, but no: we were from Oranda. Due to the language barrier not much more conversation was possible. The rest of our stay anyone coming into the restaurant was told that we were from Oranda, the only word we could understand in their conversations. After a good meal with lots of meat on a stick we returned to the hotel.
