Spotting at Wyton

North east of Huntingdon and close the village of St. Ives in Cambridgeshire, RAF Wyton was once home to the RAF elint operations flying Nimrods and Canberra's, the latter in the photo reconnaissance role. Yet another former V bomber base, Wyton is now host to more sedate aircraft in the form of Grob Tutors belonging to Cambridge UAS and No. 5 AEF, types that certainly don't make use of all the airfield made available to them .

RAF Wyton dates to the First World War, where from 1916 on the present site men of the Royal Flying Corps trained. The present airfield dates from 1935, when during the expansion of the RAF, a number of modern airfields were built to the standards of the period

On a typical day at Wyton in these period it was very normal to see more than your  share of Canberra's. In this period the following squadrons where based at Wyton :

  • Canberra's : 100, 360, 231 OCU, EWAU and 1 PRU

  • Nimrod R1: 51

On of these day's was 17-07-1986 it started as a normal day at Wyton. With all the different Canberra squadrons doing a good bit of flying. All this changed when the a Nimrod R1 came down the taxi track. It was not oncoming to see a Nimrod R1, Because they where based here. But this day it was possible to have all tree of them in one shot. A site not many times repeated
