Through Hungary in a Hurry  A visit  in 1995

For the second time this year to Hungary. This time for some pre arranged base visits. We left Sunday morning by car for the long trip. We had heard a vague rumor of an open day at Tulln Langenlebarn near Wienna so that was going to be the first target of the trip. First stop was Frankfurt Rhein Main where our aircraft recognition was tested by the view of a C17 head on. At that time a little seen type. Arriving at Tulln in the beginning of the evening there was little or no activity.

The Monday was a day to get aquatinted with Hungary. Driving around to get some preserved MiG’s we could find none. In some cases we even had a hard time locating the places where they should be. At Tokol we had our first luck. Driving up to the gate and giving the guard our best smile he opened it and we had our first base visit.
Last stop of the day was the main helicopter base. Driving past the fence and using strong binoculars we could get most of the helicopters. For some reason on the fighter field’s aircraft are always put in hangars or shelters and on helicopter fields the hello’s are always outside in the grass.

Tuesday morning we could finally get it on. The first visit of the week was at Papa where the wonderful MiG23’s were based. The happiness was disturbed a little by the announcement that flying would not commence before the end of the afternoon. At that time not unusual in Hungary. It did mean though that our planned visit at Taszar that afternoon could not go through. In itself not a problem as they would not be flying because of a lightning strike (read the crash of Su22M3U 07). At the end of the afternoon a long line of MiG’s rewarded our patience. Al day it had been beautiful weather. The first and only mission of the day was literally drowned in the rain.

Wednesday Kecskemet. At the last moment we had been able to squeeze this visit into the schedule. wonderful weather, a lot of aircraft but only one flying. The MiG’s were not flying because of a lack of spare parts, the Aero’s because of a lack of students. We were warmly greeted by the base commander who was convinced of the capacity’s of his MiG29’s, who would like to get the JAS39 and who told us that the rotation that year to Twenthe Air Base would be without aircraft. On the base itself was a compound witch was heavily fenced of and guarded. Not even the base commander could get us in there.

On the way to our hotel we stopped at a place called Vecses. It is not clear if this man was collecting old aircraft or scrap metal.
The next morning we a visit to Szolnok is on the planning. In the morning there are some high ranking military officials on the airbase. A small static display is put up for them and MiG29UB 26 gave a demo.
After they have left it is our turn. Because our guide has no more stars and stripes around him we can go ahead taking pictures of some nice Hoplite’s. We need to be careful of the taxiing Yak52’s though. The base has a great variety of aircraft, as there are a lot of different users. We also found out that having a visits to the base does not mean you have a visit to all the units or users of the airbase. We had to talk a bit to get to the Mi2’s and Mi8’s and the technical school was out of bounds. Even the museum stayed closed.

On Friday we were welcome at Taszar. Nothing had been planned for this day but after the visit on Tuesday had been cancelled we were able to pursue the guy from headquarters to led us on Friday. Friday is not a flying day so all aircraft were covered up. They did not mind to take the covers of some of the aircraft. If we had asked to do so by all aircraft they probably would have done it. We also came across the remains of Su22M3U 07 witch had gone down a week before during take off. No pictures were allowed and as we had a very nice and helpful guide and a guy from Intel with us we did not want to spoil the fun. They had laid the burned out remains down outside in the form of the aircraft it once was. An interesting sight.

After this last and good visit we were ready to turn the car back home. With a little luck and if we could get out of the country on time (that part of Hungary does not have any highways) we could still make it to the Portes Ouvertes at Colmar. As we would have it luck would not be entirely on our side. A well planned, good thought through and nicely started overtake manoeuvre ended in a fine of about 15 guilders. The local police officer came out from behind some bushes and I though he was going to announce himself as “Roscoe P Coltraine”. For all he cared we were the Dukes of Hazard! The driving after that was more careful. The guy had been given our last money. Overtaking is difficult since you are on bending and twisting secondary roads and you keep going through villages.
The trip had been near perfect. On the airbases where we had base visits almost anything was possible and the cooperation of everyone was great. Unfortunately we had some bad luck with the flying activities. At Pápa flying was cancelled because of the rain and at Kecskemét and Taszár there was no flying.
