Musée Européen de l'aviation de chasse at Montelimar

J-2304 Dassault Mirage 3S

The Musée Européen de l'aviation de chasse (The European Fighter aircraft Museum) at Montelimar was founded in 1985 by a group of friends passionately about of aviation.

It displays about fifty airplanes in it still growing collection, the last edition being a Mirage 4. The collection also includes some prototypes from Dassault Aviation.

The main focus of the collection is on European built fighter aircraft and this is shown in a collection with aircraft from several European air forces from the 30' up to now.

The build-up of the collection is influenced by the several relationships the museum has.
The Museum keeps privileged relationships with the Aerospace Museum from Le Bourget. Through this relationship the museum was entrusteds with planes for reconditioning and for preservation including some interesting prototypes from Dassault aviation.

The Museum of Montelimar is twinned with the Military Planes Museum "Clin d'Ailes"  at Payerne Switzerland via its amateur radio club. The result from this are best seen in the first hanger where three Mirage 3 from the Swiss air force are on display. Its relationships with the French Air force have recently allowed them to get new planes such as the Jaguar E a Tucano and A Mirage 4. This last plane was formerly stored at Châteaudun air base

In 2009 a other partnership was set up with the Aviation Museum from Krakow (Poland). Both Museum lend themselves planes. An Iskra came into Montelimar and a Fouga went to Krakow. A Lim 5 (polish equivalent to the Mig 17) joined the collection last summer.

Along the year, the Museum organize some special events such as the "Air Network - Denis Grange" days to celebrate the memory of a member who crashed during an air show at Issoire (France).

In a closed section of the collection, another association is housed in a hanger. The  association "Amicale des Avions Anciens de la Drôme" has as it main goal the preservation of historic planes in a airworthy condition.

Currently they have two aircraft: A Piper PA.22 "Tripacer" and a Rockwell OV-10 "Bronco". Regularly both aircrafts are present in the warbird air shows in France and the rest of Europe.

The Musée Européen de l'aviation de chasse is a good place to spend a day when you are on vacation in this sunny region of France and it is close to a other nice collection in Orange the "Musee Aeronautique D'Orange".
