F-104 Starfighter with the Royal Jordanian air force

F-104 in service with the Royal Jordanian Air Force.

The following units of the RJAF operated the Starfighter:

No. 9 Squadron RJAF based at Prince Hassan Air Base 1967 until 1983
No. 25 Squadron RJAF based at Mwaffaq Salti 1967 until 1983

The Royal Jordanian Air Force came into existence only in the early 1950s, and was heavily dependent on foreign help in its early years. The first jet aircraft of the RJAF were nine Vampire FB.Mk.9s and two Vampire T.Mk.11s, supplied from the UK in 1954. Two years later also seven ex-EAF Vampire FB.Mk.52s were donated by Egypt.

In 1958 the British supplied 12 Hunter F.Mk.6 as well. These were used to equip the No. 1 Squadron, while the Vampires were “cascaded down” to the No. 2 Squadron. By 1964 additional 23 Hunter F.Mk.73s and FGA.9s were supplied to RJAF, and by 1967 the Jordanians planned to re-equip the No.2 Squadron with them as well. With the Hunters being a mainly ground attack aircraft and the Royal Jordanian Air Force in need of a pure intercept fighter several aircraft where evaluated. Included where the Lightning and Mirage III, due to insufficient financial recourses a decision was taken to acquire aircraft via the American MAP program.
In 1966, Jordan signed a deal to acquire a squadron of F-104 a/c. Jordan obtained about 18 ex-USAF F-104As and 6 ex-USAF F-104Bs, with initial deliveries stating just before the 6-Day War of June 1967. A U.S. Air Force, training detachment consisting of F-104Bs and F-104As arrived to the country early 1967 at Amman IAP where they were used to familiarise RJAF personnel with them.

Most of Jordan's air force was destroyed on the ground during that conflict, but the Starfighters survived (since they were technically still US property) they were flown to a safe haven in Turkey just days before the Six Day War started.

After a lapse while the aftermath of the war was sorted out, the deliveries of ex-USAF Starfighters were completed, Eighteen refurbished F-104As and four two-seat F-104Bs were delivered. In 1969, President Nixon approved the delivery
of 18 additional F-104As to Jordan from Nationalist Chinese surplus stocks following their replacement by F-104Gs.

Apparently the Jordanians were instructed by Pakistani pilots, and in return for the courtesy, as mentioned above Jordanian Starfighters fought in the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War, suffering several losses at the hands of the Indian Air Force.

Jordanian Starfighters were retired from operational service in the early 80s, being replaced by French Dassault Mirage F1
fighters. Some of the old Starfighters ended up as airfield decoys, at least in some cases "dummied up" to resemble the Mirage F1. The F-104s served with No. 9 Squadron at Prince Hassan Air Base and with No 25 Squadron at Mwaffaq Salti.
